Liu and Phu’s romance shines brighter than stars

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he smell of chocolate and sugar wafts through the kitchen, mixing in with the chatter, clatter and clangs as Seniors Vivian Liu and Dylan Phu eagerly whip up a batch of brownies to share while they watch their favorite movie.

The couple first met in seventh grade when they were in the same class. Their early memories are still some of their fondest to this day. Phu remembers his friend’s birthday party while Liu reminisces about attending a basketball game together. On June 17, 2010, Phu asked Liu to be his girlfriend while stargazing together on her rooftop.

“We’ve managed to last all these years because of patience and understanding,” Liu said. “Plus, he’s really nice and kind to those around him. He’s really sweet to his parents too. He’s funny and goofy in his own way, and he’s always making me laugh and smile. He’s open-minded and understanding. He’s really smart too. He’s one of those people who will be there for you in a heartbeat if you were ever in trouble and needed help.”

Liu and Phu spend much of their time together doing a few of their favorite things such as cooking, watching movies and trying new restaurants. Surprisingly, they also wash their dogs together and Liu often holds Phu’s pinky with her index finger instead of the typical holding hands. Although they do not have a usual hangout, Liu’s rooftop, where Phu asked her to be his girlfriend, is significant in their relationship.

“I love her wonderful personality the most,” Phu said. “I would describe Vivian as a person who I can tell everything to. She was my best friend before we became a couple, and I think that has helped a lot in our relationship. She’s a very trustworthy and compassionate person who is really easy to get along with. Basically, she’s one of those people you never want to let go of.”

The couple encourages and teaches each other new things. Over time, they have changed to become better people and formed many of the same values. Liu encourages Phu to work harder academically while he has made her more street smart.

The couple advises other couples to be considerate of each other’s feelings and to give space. During fights, it is imperative to calm down before reacting in order to keep the relationship intact. Their method has been to always talk things out. Thus, they have never had a fight where they yelled or screamed at each other. After all, compromises are essential in every relationship.

Of course, they hope to disprove the stereotype that high-school relationships do not last long. So far, they have done a good job of proving everyone else wrong. In the future, they hope to attend the same college. With many more years ahead, Liu and Phu hope to continue their journey together.
