Tie your prom look together with the perfect accessory

It’s the time of the year everyone’s been anticipating: prom season. Ladies, it’s time to doll yourselves up with stunning jewelry. Gentlemen, it’s time to get out the hair gel and tie. Here are some accessories to help you both look stunning on that special night.

Headpieces

For those more in touch with nature, you can adorn your head with a flower crown. Since flowers are normally associated with peace and beauty, the crown adds a simple, yet elegant touch to your outfit that evokes a sense of innocence.

“I haven’t seen anyone wear a flower crown to prom before so I thought I would try it,” Senior Jodie Yap said. “I think it’d look best with a long, white dress with simple embroidery.”

Forehead bands have re-entered the fashion world after designers caught a glimpse of the popular 1920s trend in the upcoming film “The Great Gatsby.” A chained or beaded forehead band is a fashion statement that will definitely turn heads at prom. The use of a simple headband as opposed to a heavy, complicated one will draw attention, but won’t overpower your dress. Senior Mia Pfirrman enjoys adding unique touches like forehead bands to her outfits for dances.

“They look best with a dress that’s somewhat simple and classy, and maybe white or gold,” Pfirrman said. “If you’re going to wear it with a different color it’s better if there are accents on the dress that match the forehead band.”

Jewelry

Bracelets are a subtle, but a necessary touch to any dress. It’s difficult to predict which bracelet matches with which dress, but Junior Tiffany Gong has created a few silver and gold chain bracelets with faux suede cords and pearls that fit the classy theme of prom. She was inspired by Anneorshine’s tutorial “DIY Chain & Rhinestone Friendship bracelets {How to Make}” on Youtube.com.

“I wanted to try something new since I didn’t really have any nice bracelets,” Gong said. “They would look good with a simple, long and strapless dress, but not one with too many designs because the bracelets should stand out.”

Necklaces have become such a common accessory that people tend to forget the effect it has on an outfit. Bib necklaces are perfect for any strapless prom dress as they are a subtle addition that emits a tasteful look. However, it’s crucial to wear these necklaces only with strapless dresses, so the neck area won’t seem too cluttered.

Ties

As an essential part of every guys’ dance wardrobe, ties come in many different sizes. Thin ties have made a comeback from the 90s and are best paired with a fitted dress shirt that has a smaller sized collar, in order to balance the outfit. Pair middle-sized ties with a vest because they’ll still be noticeable even when they are half-hidden. A suit jacket works well with a thick tie, as it matches with the amount of layers.

“I prefer wearing a vest with a middle-sized tie,” Junior Aaron Huang said. “I feel as though they pair together perfectly and one will look young, yet still formal in them.”
