Keep cool easily this summer as the temperatures soar

With the temperature rising quickly in Temple City, jumping in a pool is not always an available option. Luckily, there are ways to avoid trudging through the school day a melting, sweaty mess. Instead, stay cool without letting the sun burn you out.

Drink lots of water

Naturally, your body will sweat during hot days so it’s important to keep your body hydrated with a constant supply of water. The Gatorade 32 oz. spray bottle, available at Sports Chalet for $2.99, is great in that it is bigger than your average water bottle, has a wide opening which makes it easier to fill with ice cubes and a bright orange cap that lets out a mist when the bottle is squeezed.
Covering the iced water bottle with aluminum foil and a paper towel secured with a rubber band gives some extra insulation to help keep your beverage chilled throughout the day.

Dress code for summer mode

Wear light colors that help deflect the sun rays away from your body and airy clothing that gives a little extra room around the waist and arms. Stay away from jeans and opt for shorts. Try cutting the sleeves off of t-shirts to make a comfortable tank top.
If you have long hair, pull it up into a ponytail and secure any loose hairs around the face with bobby pins to avoid sticky, sweaty hair. Finish off with a pair of shades to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays and to give your outfit that extra kick.

Eat right

Instead of a steamy orange chicken and rice box, try packing a nice crisp salad which will definitely be a refreshing treat during a warm day. Top salads with crunchy cucumbers or carrot sticks and drizzle with a light dressing such as Italian or a vinaigrette.
Eat succulent fruits such as watermelon and chilled grapes to quench your thirst. Choose to eat slightly acidic fruits, such as oranges, that will give you a cleansing feeling.
This will help to avoid the uncomfortable “warm” feeling you get when you eat foods that are heavy, creamy or too sweet, such as chocolate or teriyaki beef. The key here is hydration: eat foods with lots of water!
