Mr. Chang Starts Job

New Assistant Principal Mr. Aaron Chang introduced himself to passing students and staff on his first official day on the job, Sept. 30. He also attended a meeting with Principal Ms. King and Assistant Principals Mr. Sholty and Mr. Herington to review the week’s schedule. The new assistant principal spent the week of Sept. 23 – 27 touring the campus and classrooms with Ms. King.

Mr. Chang taught Art and Design at La Habra High School for four years, as well as at Nicolas Middle School and Sower Middle School. One of Mr. Chang’s goals is to guide students onto the path of academic success.

Band to Appear in Rose Parade

The marching band cheered with excitement as Band Director Mr. Bert Ferntheil announced their appearance in the 2015 Rose Parade. Marching band is now practicing for the school year, and will begin practice for the Rose Parade after winter break.

Mr. Ferntheil intends to have a minimum of 175 participants march, and alumni are welcome to join. Band members are also fundraising for new uniforms.

$100K Fundraiser Update

ROP Small Business teacher Ms. Kim Allen’s class explodes with applause as ASBL announces them the winners of the Cash for Computers fund drive that started on Sept. 18. ASBL gave each fourth-period classroom a small box and and students donated change to give their class points, and they collected and counted the money on Sept. 30. Ms. Allen’s class won the pizza party, but Spanish teacher Ms. Monica Rodriguez’s class raised the most money.

If the school succeeded in raising $100,000, the anonymous donor who gave the school $252,876 earlier this year would match that contribution. After ASB counted the money from the fundraiser, the total was $87,301.51, and another donor contributed $12,800, making the total $100,101.51.

Club Day

Flyers littered the quad as club members held up signs and passed out candy for Club Day on Sept. 26. Students chartered a total of over 70 clubs, 18 of which are new this year. Among them are Cat Club, Toastmasters Club and Junior Statesmen of America, JSA, which returned from a two year-long hiatus.

Seniors Josephine Hai and Nyssa Situ, co-presidents of Cat Club, hope to do arts and crafts at meetings and volunteer at animal shelters. Sophomore Karlly Feng’s Toastmasters Club is based on public speaking and preparing speeches. The newly reinstated JSA, led by Juniors Kristy Hsi and Robert Mendoza, focuses on speech and debate competitions.
