Real with Rachel: Smart boards prove to be a smart investment

Measure S is the opportunity to give TCUSD schools the upgrades and attention they need. It increases property taxes in order to pay for school site improvements, allocating TCUSD $128 million in total. Of the $128 million, approximately $7,500 will be spent on upgrading technology in each classroom. As a result, Eno Interactive 95-inch Whiteboard systems are planned to be installed in classrooms, eliminating hazardous stretched projector cords and engaging students with more interactive teaching strategies.

Teachers will enjoy the convenience of no longer using bulky overhead projectors. I’ve been in several classes where a projector has suddenly stopped working or the speakers that are connected aren’t working properly, and the lesson is forced to come to a halt. Smart boards will eliminate problems such as these.

The Eno Interactive Whiteboard system includes an Epson ultra-short throw projector, as well as amplified sound. Not only that, but it is ceramic steel, and is extremely durable. Furthermore, because it is a software-driven system, it won’t become outdated. Once updates are released, the software can be easily updated. Although an expensive investment, Eno Interactive Whiteboard systems are worthwhile and would pay for themselves in no time. In fact, replacement bulbs for the Eno Interactive Whiteboards cost only $75, while a replacement bulb for a projector ranges from $175-$300.

As a student in AP Psychology, I was quickly impressed with the Eno Interactive Whiteboard installed in Ms. Hjertstedt’s classroom. In one instance, Ms. Hjertstedt had students go up and draw the parts of a neuron. Not only was I impressed by the board’s capabilities, but it provided a fun way to get the whole class involved and working together. TCUSD hopes to install these smart boards in all classrooms, excluding those set for demolition, by the end of the year. However, the Board of Education’s approval is still pending.

While not all teachers will warm up to the idea of the Eno Interactive Whiteboard, it’s an educational tool that holds promise. Staff members should have training to fully understand how to use the new system, or it will remain a complicated, fancy gadget they never wanted. The Eno Interactive Whiteboard guarantees a more interesting, efficient and engaging classroom environment, and it should be welcomed with eager and open minds.
