Track the progress of Winter Formal

Posters decorate the hallways advertising for the upcoming Winter Formal, “Take A Chance”, set to take place on Saturday, Feb. 1.
Each year, Sophomore Class Council is in charge of planning Winter Formal. This time, it is to be held at the FrontRunner restaurant at the Santa Anita Race Track, which is conveniently close to us.
“It seemed like one of the best choices out of all the other venues we looked at,” Sophomore Class President Bailee Weisz said. “I really liked the atmosphere, and it went along with the theme I originally wanted, which was more along the lines of vintage.”
However, some students are not satisfied with it. Many seniors complain that the racetrack is just a repeated venue from their freshman year. Although it is true, students should note that it is not in the Chandelier Room of the park, but rather, the FrontRunner. The venue’s unique shape allows for a diverse number of activities that can be enjoyed including a photo booth.
“Normally, at other dances there’s just a bunch of people dancing in one area,” Winter Formal Committee Member Sophomore Nathan Wong said. “At the race track, there are different sections that divide space for specific activities and make it more interesting.”
In addition, many are confused at the meaning of the theme and how it relates to the venue. “Take A Chance” can refer to taking a chance to ask that special girl or boy to the dance. Also, it incorporates the thrill of horse racing.
For many, song tracks are the deciding factors in whether or not a dance is worth the time. After the complaints about music during Homecoming, some seem unsure about going to Winter Formal. If you can recall, the issues at Homecoming were because the administration did not approve of the DJ’s song choices.
“We have discussed with admin and the new DJ about keeping fun, popular songs on the track list to make it work for everyone,” Weisz said. “So far, everyone should be happy with the outcome of Winter Formal this year.”
Sophomore Class Council is working hard to ensure that this is a dance to remember.
