Becca’s Best of 2013

The year 2013 was a roller coaster of laughter, fun times and unforgettable memories all wrapped up in the crazy, ridiculous trends of the year. At times, I wished that it would speed up and run itself out, but the year had its own moments that I wouldn’t trade for any other. I also discovered a few new favorites that brightened up my 2013 experience.

Sugar and Sweets
Pumpkin Spice anything is an instant favorite of mine, so you could imagine my delight to find this particular gem in the frosty freezer aisles of Fresh & Easy during the fall. I decided to try something new that day when my eye spotted a stack of—lo and behold—Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream. I went home and immediately pulled out the ice cream scoop, a large bowl and the nearest spoon within reach. The first bite was marvelous—creamy, with just the right amount of sweetness and spice to balance each other out. It was heaven on earth, and I will never forget the day we met.

I also discovered another sweet treat that ranks high on my list of favorites during my stay in Germany: chocolate. Now, this isn’t simply just any chocolate; this is Milka chocolate. This is the kind that is irresistibly delicious—the kind of smooth, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate that demands to be hidden away so that others can’t find it. This is the kind that needs to be fully savored and cherished in order to be truly experienced. I first tried a piece from a friend’s chocolate bar and ran to the nearest supermarket during my free time to stock up. I almost fainted by the sheer variety I found: Oreo centers, strawberry cream fillings, hazelnut, toffee and much, much more. I bought fifteen bars in one purchase.

Music for the Soul
I was hooked onto Lorde’s unique alternative pop style from the start when I first heard “Royals,” but I was tentative to buy her new album “Pure Heroine” which was released on Sep. 27, 2013. However, I wasn’t disappointed and soon had the soundtrack on replay. Not only does Lorde incorporate complex elements of rhythm, soul and synth, but she also digs deeper with her lyrics.

What I like about this particular artist is that she isn’t swept up into the glamour and fame that comes with her success. Instead, she approaches the world with a realistic, rational mindset and gives off the impression that she’s much older than her mere 17 years. One of my favorites on the album is “Buzzcut Season.” The lyrics seem to sway along with the smooth melody, hauntingly describing a world with “Explosions on TV, and all the girls with heads inside a dream.”
