Students Campaign for ASBL Positions

Students filled the gym on March 24, 25 and 27 to vote for next year’s ASBL officers. Juniors Annaka Besaw, Asjia Fulcher, Stanley Huang, Megan Lee, Robert Mendoza, Janabelle Peng, Calvin Wang, Sophomores Alan Fong, Rachel Lin, Sandra Ngo, Bailee Weisz and Freshmen Caroline Chen and Charles Liu all ran for positions.

Perini Named Interim Superintendent

The TCUSD Board of Education voted unanimously to hire Emperor Elementary School Principal Ms. Kathy Perini as interim superintendent at a special board meeting on Feb. 28. Ms. Perini will take over for Dr. Chelsea Kang-Smith, who the Board placed on administrative leave following the board’s decision not to renew her contract for another year.

Ms. Perini began teaching in 1978 at Longden Elementary. She also worked as a teacher at La Rosa Elementary and a teacher, counselor and assistant principal of Oak Avenue Intermediate. While she was Principal of Emperor Elementary, the school earned two California Distinguished School Awards and a National School of Character under her leadership.

The district is currently looking to hire a firm to locate a new superintendent.

Summer School Changes

This year, students will take summer classes at Oak Avenue Intermediate School due construction on campus. Crews will demolish the 100s and 200s buildings in order to make room for brand new two-story buildings, scheduled for completion in the next three years.

Assistant Principal Mr. Aaron Chang will lead summer school, which will last five weeks for five days a week, instead of six weeks for four days a week.

West Point Cadets Speak at Meeting

Lieutenant Colonel Paul J. Dixon, the Field Force Representative for San Diego and Orange County, and two current West Point students Sam Jung and Steven Liu spoke about the military academy and the academic and application processes in Rm. 401 on March 21.

Incoming West Point cadet Justin Ulley also attended the informational meeting and shared his experiences at a traditional military prep school, Marion Military Institute, which led him to his acceptance to West Point.
