Prom Committee prepares “A Whole New World” for seniors, juniors

Hushed voices sounded throughout the darkness of the gym on April 4 during the Spring Rally as ASBL geared up to announce the prom theme and location; word had spread that it was related to Disneyland, but nothing was certain. Cheers and applause rang out as Junior Class Vice President Stanley Huang proudly revealed a poster announcing that students would have their prom, “A Whole New World,” at Downtown Disney on May 17 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m.

The theme “A Whole New World” is based on traveling and experiencing the world, and the dance will be one of the first Disney-related proms for the school. ASB is planning on capturing the magic of Downtown Disney for the dance by including activities such as having a magic act, pool tables, a photo booth and even karaoke. Tortilla Jo’s, a traditional-style Mexican restaurant, will provide dinner, dessert and drinks all night for promgoers.

Prom Committee members Junior Class President Janabelle Peng, Huang, Juniors Rebecca Chen, Karen Chow, William Fang, Julieann Li and Tiffany Tsai worked throughout the year to plan and organize prom, choosing Downtown Disney for its character and familiarity. They also wanted to create a somewhat nostalgic experience: since many students grew up watching Disney shows, they wanted students to end their high school years with Disney as well.

“We really wanted to have a more cozy and magical prom that didn’t seem so much like a party, but an actual dance,” Peng said. “We felt that Downtown Disney was a place that would really be fun and exciting, and the food should be amazing!”

Typically, prom takes place in an isolated location, such as a hotel, but “A Whole New World” will provide students with a view of Downtown Disney and the Disneyland rides. Students should keep in mind, however, that once they enter the venue they can’t come and go, so students hoping to explore and shop in Downtown Disney should do so before entrance.

Students looking for more detailed prom information, as well as the dance agreement and court nominations, can find it on Edline under the Students tab. If students have any additional questions, they can send them to ASBL at http://ask.fm/TempleCityAsb.
