Buckle up for driving tips

Getting a driver’s license in high school is a large milestone that many cannot wait to finally accomplish. It is important to keep a few things in mind as you prepare for that make it or break it driving test. For those of you who might have the basics down but are not quite ready, here are a few lesser known tips to help you drive safely and smoothly as you practice on the road.

Sticker References
If you’re a beginner and you often find yourself away from the center of the road, place a sticker near the bottom left corner of the car’s windshield leaving an inch of space between the sticker and the bottom of the windshield to make a point of reference.
Try to place the sticker in a spot that aligns with the lines on the road. Just remember to glance at it every now and then in order to make sure you’re driving along the center of the road.
If you’re not sure how much space to keep between your car and the vehicle ahead of you at a stop sign or red light, stop in time so that the bumper of the car in front of you is right over the bottom of your windshield in your line of vision. Nonetheless, it’s always safer to have more space between cars in case you need more time to brake for an emergency.
Counting Strategy
Another helpful tip to note is to count to four when you’re making a right turn on a three-way junction when your field of vision is obstructed to your left.
Look to the left and make sure that the lane is empty, count to four. If you don’t see any cars coming, execute the turn. If a car does appear as you count, wait for the lane to empty from your sight and start over. This will help you judge whether or not it is safe to make the turn.
Also, get into the habit of making traffic checks at each intersection, and make sure to turn your head enough so that your movements are visible to your instructor. Remember to stay relaxed, and good luck!
