Raygoza pops and locks towards his big break

A fast-paced remix resonates throughout the dance studio as Sophomore Cristian Raygoza twists, pops and locks his limbs in successive, fluid motions along to the upbeat tempo.

Raygoza is currently a member of the dance crew Get Down District as well as a separate dance agency Bloc LA. Though he has only been a member for a year and a half, he is now experienced in breakdance, hip hop, popping, locking and house.

“I enjoy how I can be myself when I dance,” Raygoza said. “I’ve always danced since I was a baby. I guess I had the rhythm in my body.”

For the sophomore, dancing is a way for him to discover more about himself. It’s a passion that he found even as a child.

“I’ll never give it up because dancing is a part of me,” Raygoza said. “It helps me find who I am.”

He’s competed with his team at Sharp International, Hip Hop International and Urban Street Jam. Practicing at an estimated 15 hours a week, Raygoza has had to slowly climb his way up to the level of skill that he’s at now. However, that hard work and dedication has reaped its benefits. After joining “Bloc LA,” the agency offered him exciting gigs to participate in, including an opportunity to break out as a dancer in the “Fancy” music video from Kidz Bop 27.

“It was a lot of fun since they cater you and there’s endless food.” Raygoza said. “But I’ve learned not to let even a little bit of fame go to your head.”

Though his peers may treat him differently because of his accomplishments, Raygoza has learned to brush off those who are quick to stereotype him. He has also had to learn how to battle the competition he feels with his younger brother.

“We both started at the same time, but he’s a lot more flexible and he’s improved so much,” Raygoza said. “We’ve gotten a lot closer because of this, but we still fight. We’re brothers.”

Raygoza finds inspiration from different dancers and various styles. One of his favorite crews is Mos Wanted Crew from Season 7 of “America’s Best Dance Crew.”

“I really like Ian Eastwood,” Raygoza said. “People say I look like him too.”

As for his future ambitions, the dancer hopes to gain some experience in contemporary dance or ballet to help build his foundation and seeks to improve himself every day.

“I plan on opening my own dance studio in the future,” Raygoza said. “I want to try to travel the world and teach people who want to learn.”
