Cafeteria spices up lunch system

Food Services Director Ms. Janice Watchler and her team spent the summer creating a new lunch menu. The menu modifications diversify the daily options and attempt to speed up the process of serving food to hundreds of people each day. The first day of service showed that the system still needed adjustments, but administrators noticed improvements from last year.
“Last year it was hard to get everybody through the lunch lines, especially on the shorter days,” Assistant Principal Mr. Aaron Chang said. “The district is going to continue to try and make things go faster and the food better.”
Six permanent meals and three daily specials made up the old menu, but food services supervisors noticed that many students weren’t satisfied with their lunches. Ms. Watchler addressed the issue by giving students more options each day in a weekly schedule.
The new menu includes Italian, Mexican and Asian cuisine, along with fusion food. The windows in the lunch shelter sell one meal of each type per day. They serve the same meals each week, so students know what to expect Monday through Friday.
Students can find four additional options in other areas. A cart in the lunch shelter by the snack bar sells Asian soups, and another one parallel to the cafeteria line has barbeque. The school still offers a daily special in the cafeteria, along with pasta and protein.
Students are excited about the new menu, but continue to experience problems with the length of the lines.
“They have more of a variety of foods this year, so that makes choosing your food more entertaining,” Sophomore Diana Tam said. “The lines are still long though, which I was hoping they would fix.”
District staff are visiting the campus daily, and will continue to do so in order to make services as efficient and satisfactory as possible.
