Update from the Student Board Member

Absences and Participation Cannot Affect Grades
The Board of Education recently approved a policy clarifying that teachers can only grade students in participation if there is an opportunity for all students to engage in the class discussion.
Students will also no longer be graded on situational factors such as absences. Whenever a student misses any work due to an absence, he or she will be given full credit for the assignment, as long as they fully complete the assignment by the extended deadline.
Additionally, pupils’ grades shall not be influenced by work habits, conduct or effort, but these factors may be reported separately.
The Board adopted these policies so that students’ grades will solely reflect their academic achievement, such as graded work, quizzes and tests.
Guaranteed APU Admissions, Scholarships
Starting in the 2017-2018 school year, Temple City will be offering current freshmen, sophomores and juniors an opportunity for guaranteed admission to Azusa Pacific University.
In order to participate in this program, students must first meet a variety of academic requirements such as maintaining a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher during grades 10-12, scoring 990 or higher on the SAT or 19 or higher on the ACT and submitting all required documents, such as letters of recommendation and final transcripts.
In addition to guaranteed admission, Azusa Pacific University will award admitted students with a renewable scholarship of $10,000 per year for their undergraduate studies provided that they complete their Financial Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
“Our partnership with APU is a perfect fit for TCUSD’s focus on school to career enrichment programs and opportunities,” said Superintendent Kathryn Perini. “The support of an academic institution of APU’s caliber bolsters our intent of offering our students broad and wide ranging opportunities in preparation for an ever-changing 21st century learning environment.”
This collaboration is the second of recent efforts to provide students with educational opportunities beyond high school. The first partnership was with PCC and offers full tuition to students for the first year.
