Girls golf wins league, competes in CIF

Girls golf placed first in the Rio Hondo League, finishing with a record of 10-0. This is their fourth consecutive year as league champions since their inaugural season in 2017.

The team won the qualifiers on Oct.19. Their combined team score of 188 beat the Gabrielino Bald Eagles’ score of 227. The team celebrated their success together with a party over Zoom.

“It’s been great to be part of the team and to be undefeated league champions,” freshman Kacey Ly said. “It felt really rewarding that our hard work has paid off.”

Senior Nicole Yang, junior Mona Nora and freshman Kacey Ly competed in the CIF Southern Sectional individual playoffs at Los Robles Greens on Oct. 27. Ly placed third with a score of 69, and advanced to the qualifier rounds on Nov. 4 where she scored 71 points, and moved on. She will compete in the next match on Nov. 11 at the Brookside Golf Course.

Teams advance to CIF

All through October, boys water polo, girls volleyball and tennis competed in the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section.

Girls volleyball qualified for CIF with a 2-0 tiebreaker victory over the Monrovia Wildcats on Oct. 14. The team lost 3-0 in the first round against the Buckley Griffins on Oct. 21, ending their season with a record of 3-5 in league.

“I’m very proud about making CIF with my teammates,” senior Miah Soriano said. “It’s been my goal since sophomore year, and to actually accomplish that in my last year of high school is a dream come true.”

For their qualifiers, girls tennis tied with the South Pasadena Tigers with a match score of 9-9. The team broke the tie with a set score of 76-71, placing them 3rd in the league.

They played a wild card game against the Immaculate Heart Pandas with a score of 13-5, securing their spot in the CIF playoffs. They lost to the La Salle Lancers with a score of 11-7 during their playoff games on Nov. 3.

“I’m happy that I was able to contribute to us going to CIF,” junior Karin Wong said. “The seniors were really good this year, and I felt like going to CIF was a reward for them.”

Boys water polo also advanced to CIF after their 10-8 qualifier win on Oct. 21 against the San Marino Titans to secure the second place spot in their league. Water polo lost 21-5 on Nov. 2 against the Aliso Niguel Wolverines after their tie with South Pasadena.

“This CIF game was good because it allowed us to see where we are in comparison to a really good team,” junior Cether Deng said. “I hope that we can take this loss and use it as fuel for next season.”

New locker room

Girls basketball now has their own locker room. Located upstairs in the gym across the boys’ locker room, the team will use the refurbished room to hold meetings and store belongings.

The room, previously unoccupied, has a large whiteboard and many chairs for players.

“It is nice to know that there is a place to put all of our stuff,” sophomore Tallulah Trieu said. “I know everybody on the team, and we are all using that same space. It is just us, and it feels comforting.”

The team will continue to use the new locker room even after their season ends.
