Peng sheds some light on Winter Formal questions

With boys scrambling to order their corsages and boutonnieres and girls on a hunt to find the perfect dress for the night, it can only be dance season again. Sophomore Class President Janabelle Peng gives us a look into the hard work and planning that went into this year’s City Lights, Starry Nights Winter Formal.

Q: Why did you pick the Omni Hotel as the dance’s location?
A: We picked the Omni Hotel for this year’s dance because we felt that the venue was very elegant and modern. The room we have is spacious and one of a kind. We love the color scheme in the room, and I felt like it was perfect for a formal dance.

Q: What’s the reason behind the separate prices this year instead of the usual couples ticket prices?
A: The reason we had only single ticket prices this year was because in past years, people have taken advantage of the system by going with their friends with ASB cards so they could get the cheaper price. So we wanted to make sure people with ASB were getting what they paid for and those with ID’s will be motivated to buy an ASB card.

Q: What does it take to plan Winter Formal?
A: We actually started planning Winter Formal last year and we started making a calendar during the summer. We had to make a committee, think of lunchtime and break games, organize court nominations, get a DJ, pick centerpieces, think of the theme, get favors (everyone will be receiving a favor this year, not one per couple), advertise, make
a bunch of posters and film a promo video.

Q: What were some difficulties or challenges you faced while planning Winter Formal?
A: Planning a dance for the entire school is already quite difficult because we need to try and incorporate things into the dance that we feel will benefit the majority of the student body. However, there are always people who feel that we don’t try and the dance is just expensive. We had difficulties with our budget because we want to create the best experience for students without making them pay a lot of money. But regardless of the difficulties, we always need to continue to plan a great dance.

Q: What were some goals you set when initially planning the dance, and how did you accomplish them?
A: I wanted the decorations for the dance to look very elegant, and I feel that we accomplished that. Most high quality decorations are extremely expensive, and I felt that we found centerpieces that are unique. I also feel like we met all our deadlines that we set at first and although not everything has been going our way, we are doing the best we can and so far, Winter Formal seems right on track.
