Holocaust Museum Trip
Ms. Stacy Rudzik’s World History classes took a field trip to the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust on April 3 from 8:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Students learned about the atrocities of anti-Semitism in Europe during World War II. They were also able to speak to a survivor who shared his first-hand account of the Holocaust.
After the tour, students were able to explore The Grove and get lunch at the Farmer’s Market.

Woman Found Dead in Temple City
Police are investigating the homicide of a longtime resident, Carmen Garcia in her home on Key West Street in southern Temple City. Her daughter found her mother’s body on March 31 after her mother stopped picking up her phone calls. Neighbors were alarmed when they heard her screams after she found the bloody body.

Supreme Court Hears Arguments
The U.S. Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the constitutionality of California’s Proposition 8 and the Defense of Marriage Act on March 26 and 27. On the first day, the Court heard arguments regarding Proposition 8, which defines marriage to be between only a man and a woman.

On March 27, the Supreme Court considered the Defense of Marriage Act. New York resident Edith Windsor is challenging DOMA because she was forced to pay an estate tax after her wife died. She wouldn’t have to pay the tax if her spouse was a man.

Accident at Eaton Canyon
Mark Keppel High School Senior Esther Suen died during a spring break hiking trip on March 22 at Eaton Canyon. Suen was hiking to the second waterfall with three friends when she fell 200 feet from a cliff.

Suen’s head injuries were so severe that first responders pronounced her dead at the scene. An 18 year-old friend also fell, but was airlifted to a nearby hospital and survived the accident.

SCSBOA Music Festival
Honors orchestra received a Unanimous Superior, the highest rating in the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Music Festival on April 2.

All levels of TCHS’ bands and orchestras, along with those from other schools, performed three pieces in front of three judges. The judges critiqued the groups based on areas such as intonation, balance and interpretation.
After performances, students either moved on to a sight reading session with their conductor, which is also part of the judging, or moved on to a clinic with a judge.

The three judges gave Honors Orchestra the highest score of Unanimous Superior.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Yearbook Fundraiser
Yearbook held a fundraiser on March 29 in the quad from 3-4 p.m. in order to get money for new equipment by selling Fluff Ice. Many students ordered their signature shaved ice as well as drinks from a Fluff Ice truck. Yearbook received 10 percent of the final profit.

U.S. Adds New Missile Interceptors
The U.S. Defense Secretary, Chuck Hagel, announced the addition of 14 new missile interceptors in Alaska on March 15.
The interceptors can shoot down long range missiles if necessary. The 14 will be added to the 26 already there in Alaska, and is part of a $1 billion increase to a West Coast-based missile defense system.
