Strike a balance between formal and casual attire

As the homecoming dance draws near, students prep to look their best without looking over-dressed or too casual. Finding the perfect balance for a semi-formal dance can be tricky, so here are a few helpful tips to guide you along the process.

For Guys
For guys, there is one simple and basic rule for semi-formal dress code: Wear a suit, not a tuxedo. But, the hard part is understanding what makes a suit and what makes a tuxedo.

A suit normally consists of a button-down shirt, in any solid color of your choice, possibly paired with a vest. A tuxedo, on the other hand, is the more tailored version of a suit. Traditional tuxedos are generally worn with a bow, vest and a cummerbund. There is also satin on the lapels, buttons and pocket trim.

For homecoming, stay away from patterned shirts they’re for a daytime event. It’s also best to pair a dark colored jacket with matching colored slacks. Make sure both articles of clothing fit your form so that you don’t look rumpled.

As for ties and bows, this is the area where you are allowed the most freedom. It’s acceptable for ties to have patterns or stripes on them, granted they aren’t over the top. It’s better to contrast the colors between the tie or bow and the button-down shirt, so the accessory will stand out against your suit.

Dark colored loafers, Oxfords or shoes that are similar in style to Oxfords are good choices for men’s footwear. Also, wear dark socks instead of light socks, as light socks will draw the attention to your ankles.

For Girls
For girls, there’s a wide range of dress styles to choose from. It’s best to save the long dresses for prom and opt for a short dress instead. If you can imagine yourself going to a picnic or dinner with friends in it, then it’s probably too casual. If you can see yourself walking down the red carpet in it, it’s probably too formal. You can never go wrong with a little black dress.

For a trendy look, stack your bracelets on and switch up the colors. Wear a bib necklace. Strap on stilettos in a bright, fun color and match your accessories to a clutch. It’s important to color coordinate for this look.

If you’re looking for a simple outfit, stick to the usual solid black or neutral colors when it comes to shoes. The smaller the earrings, the better. Stay away from bold colors; they will draw attention away from your dress.

You can also play around with the traditional style and wear black or neutral colored heels that are preferably less than three inches.
