Letter to the Editor: Homecoming

Dear Editor:

I would like to share some comments in regards to the article “Real with Rachel – Dance classy, not trashy” in issue 5.

There exist some misconceptions about Homecoming. Early on at our recent dance, a large group of students began to dance inappropriately. Too many for individual chaperones to address. At that time, Mr. Sholty and myself explicitly required the DJ to change his music selection to something the students would not grind to. The result was that these students then booed the DJ.

Please know that the music selection was closely controlled by administration. This was not the fault of the DJ, and does not represent his quality as a DJ nor his music choices. These students’ frustration was unfairly misplaced.

If any student plans to attend a school dance with the intention of dancing inappropriately, please save your money. If “all the schools dance this way,” then please go to a dance at one of those schools. There is a lot of popular music, including rap, that is school appropriate and could be played at dances. Unfortunately, when some students misbehave, everyone loses out and does not get to enjoy that music.

It should be also noted that after the said mentioned group of students left, we no longer had any issues with inappropriate dancing. Unfortunately, as administration, I no longer felt safe to play some of the more popular songs that students were requesting. It is not my intention that this be the case at any upcoming events, just as long as students “Dance classy, not trashy.”
