Song Tips: How to stay on track during finals season

‘Twas the night before finals, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Well, except maybe you. Some can stand studying in silence and so staying up late is optimal. However other people, myself included, find silence more distracting than having some sort of background noise. Here are some suggestions to play while brushing up on your math formulas.

Coffitivity (http://coffitivity.com)
Coffitivity is a simple website that simulates the sounds heard in a coffee shop. The website lists several credible sites that explain the science of how each specific sound leads to an increase in creativity, but I just use it to provide a background noise that isn’t too distracting from my textbook. Another great thing I like is the fact that the simulated conversations are just murmurs, so you aren’t tempted to try to eavesdrop.

Rainy Mood (http://www.rainymood.com)
Rainy Mood is another website that plays a track of rain sounds. It’s quite self explanatory, but for people who like rain, this is a great site to listen to while studying.
For songs with lyrics, it is important to find a song that is upbeat but not distracting, calming, but not sleep-inducing. Also you should find songs you won’t be tempted to sing along to: no “I’ll Make A Man Out Of You” or “Let It Go.”
“Fire Escape”
“Fire Escape” by Jessie Epstein, otherwise known as Imaginary Future, is a calm and soothing track. Epstein’s voice blends smoothly with wife Kina Grannis’s voice, as they sing in harmony to a soft guitar in the background. This song is great for those who are distracted by loud beats as this tune inspires a tranquil feeling.
“In Your Eyes”
Sung by Australian singer-songwriter Jake Nauta, “In Your Eyes” begins with rhythmic guitar strumming. Nauta’s warm voice accompanies the instrument, creating a summery vibe that is perfect for feeling good while memorizing Physics formulas.
“Weightless”
And finally, end the night with “Weightless.” Created by sound therapists and British band, Marconi Union, it was designed to be the most relaxing song ever. With a consistent beat in the background, this track features an electronic hum and random chimes. Listening to this song is extremely calming, and I’ve found my heartbeat begins to match the beat. An eight minute track, this song is long enough to lull yourself into a deep sleep, perfect for the night before your big final.
