Advanced Drama Places at Cal Poly
With stage lights shining on them, Advanced Drama students performed at the Cal Poly Pomona High School Scene Festival for the first time on Jan. 10. Senior Samantha Ribaya, Junior Alec Velazquez and Sophomores Emily Saxon and Laura Zhang placed second overall with “The Universal Language,” and Seniors Susana Miramontes and Tiffany Zhao, Juniors Franceska Millanponce, Kaythi Nyein and Cynthia Yong and Sophomore Allison Ige received Honorable Mention for “The Heidi Chronicles.” Zhao and Velazquez were named Best Actress and Best Actor, respectively.

Senior Tsang Competes at MIT
Senior Vincent Tsang and teammate Junior Alejandro Munoz from Florida’s Cypress Bay High School faced off against high school students across the country at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Jan. 17. Nine teams competed in three-team alliances to write code to control a simulated satellite while dodging obstacles and to shoot down a meteor headed for Earth.

Astronauts at the International Space Station performed the maneuvers that the finalists came up with. Tsang and Munoz, the first seeds in the semifinals, won the first of two matches against other teams, but failed to avoid an obstacle in the second, disqualifying them.

Staff Updates
Former Cloverly students who have gone to the nurse’s office in the past weeks may have noticed a familiar face at the desk, health clerk Lupe Valle-Glover, who worked at Cloverly for eight years before transferring here on Dec. 20. She hopes to help keep students healthy and educated on proper medical procedures for common injuries.
