Aussies bring share of outback

We all know it’s that time of year again, when Australian voices suddenly appear in our bulletin to signal the arrival of our classmates from the land down under. Though we speak a common language—literally—there’s a lot that separates us from them. Rampage is taking the opportunity to show some of these differences, from their music and snack tastes to their slang.

Australian Slang: Amy Fradd and Fergus Ryan

“Australian Slang is basically shorter versions of words said here. I think the colloquialisms really depend on where you’re from, for example, I’ve heard people use abbreviations out loud like ‘TBH’ or ‘TTYL’ here. Although, I know I say ‘like’ a lot.”
—Amy Fradd

Sickie (Chucking a Sickie) refers to the time
when someone takes a sick day off or skips a day off of work

Arvo is another word for “afternoon”

Macca’s means McDonald’s

Spag-Bol means Spaghetti and Meatballs

Guest DJ: Tom Smithers

“Scar Tissue” — Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Smithers enjoys listening to this song whilst relaxing and chilling at home. One of his favorite tunes, he loves its calming vibes and how he can listen to it no matter what mood he’s in.

“The Funeral”
— Band of Horses
With its overdriven Rock n Roll tempo, Smithers loves how this song brings Rock to another level by mixing in Country.

“Liquorlip Loaded Gun” — Sticky Fingers
Smithers enjoys how this Australian band mixes reggae and punk together to create the ultimate song to listen to while studying or relaxing at home.

“Everlong” — Foo Fighters
The Foo Fighters are one of Smithers’ favorite bands and with this song’s Alternative Rock beats and nostalgic lyrics, it means the most to him. After seeing them live, he loves reminiscing about how music can bring strangers together, connecting them througha shared a interest.

“Sultans of Swing” — Dire Straits
As a guitarist himself, Smithers finds this song absolutely amazing. However, what he appreciates most is the meaning it holds. Being able to share a love of the same band and similar music interests with his father makes this song one of Smither’s top favorites.

American Snacks Taste Test

Takis

“Honestly these are terrible, I really hate spicy foods. I’ve had one of those Hot Cheetos before and I could barely handle that, this is just a whole ‘nother
level of spicy. The closest thing to the Takis back home would be have to be these Roulette Doritos.”
—Brooke Gibson

Butterfinger

“Yummy. This chocolate is definitely different
from the Twix, it just melts nicely in your mouth. Honestly, once you get to the middle all I can taste is peanut butter but
I love this.”
—Alyssa Micallef

Twinkies

“Oh! These were discontinued a while back. The creme looked a little too artificial and when I took a bite, it tasted more like butter. I didn’t really enjoy this one especially
because of the aftertaste.”
—Amy Schultz
