Timeless classics serve sweet moments

Valentine’s Day is around the corner and not only is this a time to share love to your significant other, but also the time to bundle up in your favorite pajamas to watch classic romantic cheesy movies from the 80s. These type of films are not only iconic themselves but they all share genuine moments that ultimately make your heart swoon and cry with five boxes of tissues during the ending credits.

“Say Anything”
Imagine you are sitting in your room upset about a breakup as you lie on your bed with tears on your face. You hear a song blaring outside your window that reminds you of a sweet memory you once had with your boyfriend. As you look out your window to hear where the song is coming from, you discover your boyfriend raising a boom box in his hands and over his head, playing that song for you.
This sentimental moment is from the film “Say Anything,” which is about two high school graduates named Diane Court and Lloyd Dobler who fall in love the summer before Diane has to leave to college.
The two characters contrast one another: Diane is the valedictorian of her school and Lloyd is the more carefree student. They experience ups and downs but always go back to each other for their love.
“Pretty In Pink”
Andie Walsh is known to be the outcast and does not have as much money as the other students she goes to school with. She meets Blane McDonagh, who is from a rich family. They continue to be together as they go through the hardships of living in two different worlds among their friends and family.
When they first meet, Andie is sitting on a computer in the school library. Suddenly, the screen turns black with the words, “Do you want to talk?” Immediately, she sees this as a joke that her friend Duckie is pulling, so she types back, “Duckie, I’m working” as she rolls her eyes.
The computer types back “Who’s Duckie?” Confusingly she responds with “Do you know who you are?” Then the screen cuts to a picture of her crush Blane and he stands up from the computer in front of her and they both smile at each other as Andie blushes, making you want to say “aw.”

“Can’t Buy Me Love”
“Can’t Buy Me Love” makes you feel like you’re watching it the first time no matter how many times you’ve seen it. Ronald makes a deal with the most popular girl in school Cindy to pay the expenses for ruining her mother’s favorite suede outfit.
The two spend time together as they are in Cindy’s front yard and Ronald helps wash her car. She then shares her notebook with him and then asks him to read her poem that she has never shared with anyone. After he read it out loud, she asks Ronald to keep her poetry writing a secret and he replies, “You should be proud of it. You’re talented.”
It is a moment that expresses how their relationship strengthened in such a little amount of time, even though they have been neighbors since they were both young. This scene also marks the time when the two characters start to accept one another for who they are.

“The Princess Bride”
The 80s are known for all of their ideal rom com teen love stories. However, if you are in the mood for a fairytale film filled with comedy, romance and action, “The Princess Bride” may just be the movie for you.
The classic is about Princess Buttercup, who is forced to marry Prince Humperdinck. However, her heart actually lies with Westley, a farm boy she met a while back who returns home as a skillful pirate to save her from this marriage.
The ultimate romantic moment occurs when they first meet on Buttercup’s family farm. She demands Westley to do as she pleases, saying things such as “Farm Boy, fetch me that pitcher.” He sweetly replies with “as you wish” as he looks into her eyes.
Because he always says to this to her, she comes to realize that he means “I love you.” I know it is very cheesy, but you have to admit it is one of the most iconic scenes that you will never forget.
