Changes to ELD program
Starting in the 2019-2020 school year, ELD 3 and English 1 Sheltered will be combined into one class so students can advance faster to a regular English class.

With this merge, more ELD students will have enough English credits to be eligible to apply to University of California and California State University schools.

“As an ELD 1 student, I’m glad that the classes will be combined,” Freshman Youran Cui said. “In the future I can have more options for college.”

The change also aligns more closely with the students’ English Language Proficiency Assessments for California exam results. For example, most students who score at an overall level of two on the test will take ELD 2.

Winter sports make it to CIF Championships
Girls Varsity Water Polo played their wildcard round of CIF-SS Division III Championships against Redondo Union High School on Feb. 5 and lost with a score of 21-12. Teams who are not guaranteed a spot in the tournament compete against each other in a wildcard round to determine who moves on to the first round of CIF.

In their second round of the tournament, Girls Varsity Soccer went into overtime with Costa Mesa High School on Feb. 8. Neither team scored, so they proceeded into a penalty shootout, where the Lady Rams were eliminated.

After the Boys Varsity Basketball team won against Flintridge Preparatory School, the Rams lost to Fairmont Preparatory School on Feb. 12 with a score of 64-36.

German 3/4 classes face a change of plans
Previously, administration anticipated that German 3/4 students in zero period taking the Pasadena City College program for college credit would have the course added to their schedules as their eighth period class and their zero period class would be removed.

However, due to challenges with accurate reporting on transcripts, participants will need to attend zero period German 3/4. Zero and third period German 3/4 will be study hall classes.

German 2 had the same opportunity to take the eighth period class alongside the German 3/4 students, which started on Feb. 20.
