Let’s reflect on mirror selfies

From the time the new buildings opened last year, my Snapchat feed has been flooded with bathroom mirror selfies. Despite the overlooked oddity behind posing near toilets, I do not think there is anything definitively wrong with bathroom selfies. However, I do think that they are overused and borderline abused, and that they’re a subject worth talking about.
A quick snap of your outfit can leave you feeling confident and cheerful. If you’re dressed especially cute and want a slight mood boost, then go ahead and take your mirror selfie. Pose any way you like and shamelessly share your radiant smile on your profile. However, if you cannot comfortably exit the bathroom without posing for a picture, I think it’s time you rethink your motives.
Mirror selfies should be reserved for the special days when your water bottle coincidentally matches your outfit, or for when you’re all jazzed up for a class presentation. On the other hand, maybe you are so poorly dressed that it’s worth poking fun at. If you are merely taking a picture by force of habit, rather than by choice, then there is a problem.
Another thing I find amusing is how embarrassed people get when someone walks in on their picture. It’s pretty ironic. They’re not ashamed to post the selfie all over social media, yet can’t bear the humiliation of being seen snapping the picture. It’s as if we’re expected to believe the selfies just appear out of thin air.
Just some words of advice: if someone accidentally intrudes on your selfie, save yourself the embarrassment and admit to your crime. Don’t awkwardly stand in front of the mirror and pretend to respond to text messages. You aren’t fooling anyone.
I do not hate mirror selfies, and by no means do I wish that they completely vanish. However, I do think that people should take them more sparingly and with confidence. While I’ve had enough of the constant spamming, I’m in full support of an occasional selfie backed up with purpose and a genuine smile.
