Board reduces PE requirements

Fewer students will need to sport PE clothes for the 2019-2020 school year because the school board passed a resolution to lower the physical education requirement for graduation from three to two years.

“This is especially beneficial for students who are unsure of what field they want to go into because it gives them the opportunity to try something new,” senior Eileen Duong said. “I do believe that physical education is important, but surrounding districts only have a two year PE requirement, so our three year requirement seemed excessive and unnecessary.”

During a meeting on May 8, the school board voted to implement this change to make space in students’ schedules so they can register for more classes.

“As a department we are disappointed by the three year requirement being changed to two years,” the PE department said in a statement. “We feel physical activity all the time is very important for the well being of our students both mentally and physically. On a positive note we are pleased that nobody in our department will be displaced next year.”

Even with the board’s decision, students are still able to enroll in PE classes for elective credit.
