Staff changes continue as year progresses

Nguyen named assistant principal

Binh Nguyen will begin as the new assistant principal on Nov. 12 after being a dean of students at a middle school in Boyle Heights, LAUSD.

Nguyen has had a career in education for 17 years. He currently holds a Masters of Science and an administrative credential from National University.

“He seems approachable and down-toearth,” English teacher Lynn Alvarez said. “I hope he will have an open door policy and will support the staff, teachers and students.”


Smith appointed as athletic director

Counselor Cary Smith began his temporary position as an athletics director.

“It was necessary for me to take on this role,” Smith said. “It’s important to me that our students and student athletes have a great experience here.”


Betts becomes counselor Kathy Betts became a temporary counselor on Oct. 21 after working 19 years in TCUSD as a substitute counselor at Cloverly Elementary School and Longden Elementary School, substitute teacher and intern at Oak Avenue Intermediate School.

“Just like every other counselor here, I want to help the students to be successful,” Betts said. “I try to be creative with how I help the students, especially with personal and social issues.”


Substitutes fill in for Bailey

After Hank Bailey’s hospitalization, substitute teacher Norman Broellos now teaches his classes. Math teachers Nate Slaymaker, Gary Ledger and Mike Tomasulo will fill his position when he is unavailable.

“I’m worried about Mr. Bailey because we believed he would return after a week,” sophomore Ivan Rim said. “I can’t really learn as well now because I’ve forgotten a lot of the material we learned before.”
