Girls water polo treads towards CIF

Starting off strong, the team scored the first point in the first quarter of the match on Jan. 30. However, they faltered after the second quarter against the Wildcats and called various timeouts.

Girls varsity water polo maintains a strong lead in league competitions with a date win of 8-6 against the Monrovia Wildcats and a total league score of 6-0.
Throughout the season, the team won three out of four non-league games and are undefeated in league.
However, they have only won three out of the eight games in their tournament, which is crucial in deciding which schools play in CIF playoffs.
“Our most important tournament game was against the Buena Park Coyotes,” senior Sydney Chiang, team captain, said. “The biggest thing was that we finished our shots and completed them. The other team was close to winning because we missed a lot of shots.”
Chiang helps the team work together and establishes a coaching style to fit the team’s varying skill levels. Senior Phoebe Loh also helps by giving tips to the underclassmen to better solidify them as a team.
Loh says their best game was their first league match against the South Pasadena Tigers, where they won with a score of 9-4 on Jan. 7.
“It was super interesting to see that level of play from the team,” Loh said. “The team is mostly underclassmen, but they worked like how a well oiled machine would. It really showed that they were motivated and working hard.”
The girls varsity water polo team are now waiting for the verdict on whether they made CIF or not.
Finalists will be announced on Feb. 8, but the girls will continue to have practices on Feb. 6-7 in case they make CIF.
