Fewer seniors equals decreased competition for college admissions

Larry Gordon of the Los Angeles Times reported that there are less students competing for spots in the incoming college freshman class of 2014. According to a National Center for Education Statistics study, the number of high school graduates in 2014 is 3.2 million, a 5.8% decrease from 3.4 million in 2013.

Because of the decline in graduating students, smaller colleges and universities have been visiting more high schools than in previous years.

This fall, 40 colleges and universities, including many out-of-state schools, came to TCHS and gave presentations, while last year, 28 schools visited.

“We’ve also seen a greater diversity of schools who did not come here last year,” College and Career Center Coordinator Ms. Amy Sisson said. “The new schools were mostly both public and private out-of-state schools.”
