Sports Brief

Varsity Football
After their 28-12 fall to Polytechnic Panthers, the Boys Varsity Football team went into the Monrovia game on Sept. 28 with a 2-2 overall record.
Their biggest win was against Gabrielino with a score of 26-14, where Seniors Daniel Centeno and Samuel Jackimowicz executed a pass play design. Centeno drew the defense in, creating a window for Jackimowicz to break into.
Jackimowicz made an impressive catch and ran the ball forward, advancing TC deep into the Eagles’ defensive line.
In addition to set plays, the Rams have also experienced position changes this season. Senior Zachary Colores primarily played full back last year, but has taken on a bigger role by competing as an attacker as well. Although he’s playing a new position, Colores trusts that Coach Saxon’s guidance will lead the team to success.
“I really like his confidence in us,” Colores said. “He knows who can do what and what the team is capable of.”
Cross Country
The Cross Country team forsees a promising season after their successes at the Rosemead Invitational and their first Rio Hondo league meet. During the Rio Hondo league meet on Sept. 20, Boys Varsity won second place and Freshman Thomas Li ran a 18:35 race time, scoring him first place in the Frosh/Soph race.
In the Rosemead Invitational, the juniors won second place and the seniors ranked third. Junior Philycius Tjong and Senior Daniel Jong both completed the race within the 16-minute mark. As for the girls, Sophomore Clarissa Hong clocked in at 20:04 minutes and managed to snatch third place by a mere 0.09 of a second.
“The last couple seconds I remembered how I got fourth last year in this race,” Hong said. “I knew third place was reachable, and I didn’t want to settle for less.”
Rather than strictly focusing on winning, Coach MikeTomasulo saw the meet as a way to construct a starting point for the new runners to build off of.
“With the new ones you just don’t know what they’re going to do,” Tomasulo said. “I didn’t have any really big expectations. I just wanted them to run to see where they’re at.”
