Even without a pool, Varsity has high hopes

The boys Varsity Water polo team defeated The La Cañada Spartans on Oct. 18 with a score of 13-9. The Rams currently stand at a league record of 5-1 with an upcoming game against the South Pasadena Tigers on Oct. 23.
Due to the construction of a new pool at TCHS, the Boys Varsity Water Polo team has been without a place to practice since the start of this school year.
Since then, the team has been practicing at the Duarte Fitness Center, which is a thirty minute drive away from the high school.
The team has had to commute to their new training site via bus instead of a short walk across campus.
“It would be way easier to be able to walk to the pool instead of taking the bus,” Freshman Nicholas Yoon said. “We also only have [practice] three days a week.”
This has posed a major problem for the team as it has been difficult for all members to attend practices.
“Some kids can’t even come to practice because of seventh period,” Junior Peter Trinh said.
Trinh also noted that other varsity players have other commitments like band, which make it even harder for the team to practice together.
Additionally, the team only has three days of practice per week, which has been one of the biggest challenges that the team has had to face so far.
However, Coach Davo Gharagyozyan, believes that the team is still doing well.
“The team is doing very well. [Varsity has] been doing really well this year,” Coach Gharagyozyan said. “Practice has been going well [and] the team is very motivated.”
Despite everything, the team still believes that its members have come a long way since they’ve started.
Most of the players have been playing water polo since their elementary years, and are well-versed in the game.
In fact, many of them have known each other for more than four years.
“[The team] knows the game really well,” Trinh said. “We have chemistry, so even though we may not be as fast or large as the other teams, we can beat them with our knowledge.”
